If your website has hundreds or thousands of pages, multiple services, location pages, product ranges, filters, legacy content or more than one team adding to it, technical SEO stops being a tidy checklist and starts becoming a commercial risk. That is why a proper guide to technical SEO for complex sites needs to focus on what actually blocks leads and sales, not just what looks good in an audit PDF.
I see this a lot. A business has invested heavily in its website, but key pages are not being crawled properly, old pages keep competing with new ones, and Google spends time on junk URLs instead of the pages that bring enquiries. Then an agency hands over a generic report full of red, amber and green icons and no real prioritisation. That is not strategy. It is admin dressed up as expertise.
A complex site is not only a big site. It is any site where search engines can take the wrong path.
That could mean faceted navigation creating thousands of near-duplicate URLs. It could mean service pages spread across regions with weak internal linking. It could mean migrations, subdomains, JavaScript-heavy content, parameter issues, inconsistent canonicals or old blog content muddying the message. In construction and other established trades, I also often see sites that have grown in stages over years, with different developers, different CMS decisions and no clear structure tying it all together.
Complexity matters because Google has limited time and resources for every site. If crawlers waste that budget on pages that should not rank, your money pages can be delayed, ignored or misunderstood. That is where technical SEO becomes commercial, not cosmetic.
Before changing title tags or adding more content, I want to know what search engines are actually able to reach, render and prioritise.
The first job is to compare three versions of the site. There is the site you think you have, the site users can browse, and the site search engines can crawl. On complex websites those are rarely the same. I look at XML sitemaps, internal linking paths, orphan pages, blocked resources, redirect chains, status codes and indexable URL counts. If those numbers do not line up, there is usually wasted opportunity sitting in plain sight.
A common problem is over-indexation. Businesses assume more indexed pages means more visibility. Usually it means the opposite. If tag pages, filtered URLs, duplicate variants, staging remnants or thin archive pages are indexable, they dilute the signals that should be going to your core commercial pages. The answer is not to start deleting everything blindly. It depends on whether those pages serve users, whether they attract traffic, and whether they support the sales journey. Technical SEO done properly is about choosing what deserves attention.
Some agencies overplay crawl budget as if every site is an enterprise giant. That is lazy scaremongering. For smaller sites, it is not usually the main issue. For genuinely complex sites, though, inefficient crawling can absolutely hold back growth.
If Googlebot keeps finding duplicate pathways, endless filtered combinations or old redirected URLs in navigation and sitemaps, it spends time in the wrong places. I would rather have 300 pages crawled properly and understood well than 8,000 URLs discovered and mostly ignored.
Many indexing issues are not caused by a technical bug alone. They come from poor decisions about site architecture.
If your core services are buried three or four clicks deep, while low-value pages sit in the main nav, you are telling search engines the wrong story. If location pages all use nearly identical copy with only the town name swapped, you create duplication and weak relevance at the same time. If old service pages still exist after a redesign without a clear redirect plan, authority gets split across versions.
For complex sites, I look at structure in layers. First, what are the main commercial themes? Second, which pages best represent those themes? Third, does the internal linking reinforce that hierarchy? If not, rankings become patchy and unpredictable.
This is where many businesses waste months chasing content output when the real problem is architecture. More pages will not save a confused site.
Internal linking is one of the least glamorous parts of SEO, which is exactly why it is often neglected. Yet on large or messy websites, it is one of the strongest levers you have.
I am not talking about stuffing links everywhere. I mean deliberate pathways that help users and search engines move from broad topics to specific buying pages. A well-structured internal linking system distributes authority, clarifies page relationships and helps Google understand what matters most.
For example, if a construction firm wants to rank for commercial refurbishment, fit-out, office renovation and related local service terms, those pages need to support each other sensibly. The hub page should link down to the right service variants. Supporting content should point back to the money pages. Navigation, breadcrumbs and contextual links should all reinforce the same hierarchy. If every page links randomly or not at all, the site feels stitched together rather than engineered.
These are not exciting topics, but they save rankings.
Canonical tags should support your indexing strategy, not contradict it. Redirects should be clean and purposeful, not layer upon layer from past redesigns. Duplicate control matters most where CMS quirks, filters, printer pages, tracking parameters or copied service templates create multiple versions of the same intent.
I often find businesses relying on canonicals to fix problems that should have been solved through better URL handling or stronger information architecture. A canonical is a hint, not a magic wand. If you have five weak versions of a page and poor internal signals, Google may still make its own choice.
Page speed matters. So does mobile usability, stable layout and clean rendering. But I am careful here because this is where SEO advice often becomes performative.
If your site is painfully slow, difficult to use on mobile or relies on JavaScript in a way that hides meaningful content, yes, fix it. Those issues affect rankings and conversions. But shaving 0.2 seconds off load time will not rescue a site with duplicated service pages, weak structure and poor crawl control.
That is the trade-off. We need technical standards to be strong, but we also need priorities in the right order. For most complex sites, I would rather fix indexation, internal linking and architecture before chasing perfect Lighthouse scores.
Structured data can help search engines interpret content more clearly, especially on service pages, articles, FAQs and business information. But schema should support what is already present on the page. It should not be used to paper over weak content or unclear page purpose.
For established firms, trust signals also matter beyond code. Consistent business details, clear service areas, authoritativeness in content and a site that presents the company as credible and current all feed into how search engines and buyers judge quality. Technical SEO is not separate from commercial trust. The two overlap more than many people realise.
A long list of issues is easy to produce. A ranked action plan is where the value is.
I usually group work into four questions. What is stopping key pages being crawled? What is stopping the right pages being indexed? What is confusing topical relevance and authority? What is hurting conversion once traffic arrives? That keeps the work tied to outcomes rather than vanity metrics.
Some fixes are high impact and quick to ship, such as cleaning internal links to redirected URLs, removing junk from sitemaps or tightening indexation rules. Others take more planning, like restructuring service hubs, consolidating duplicate content or repairing a messy migration history. The right order depends on the site, the CMS, internal resources and how much revenue sits behind each section.
That is why one-off template audits are usually poor value. They tell you what is wrong in theory, but not what matters most commercially.
If your site is small and tidy, many technical checks can be handled in-house with the right tools and some care. If your site is large, old, multi-layered or central to lead generation, mistakes become expensive quickly.
The businesses I speak to are not looking for charts to admire. They want to know why enquiries are inconsistent, why strong services are buried, and why traffic does not match the quality of the company. A proper technical review should answer those questions in plain English and turn them into a plan.
